Serubungo Bariyanga Lambert is my name. I was born on July 15, 1960 in Rumangabo. Right now I work in the southern sector of the park. I am a sergeant and I run the Rumangabo Station. My number is: 00551. My wife is called Gasusa Nyirandimubanzi and we have two children: Niyibizi, Uwizeyimana.
I joined the ICCN in 1985 when they created a unit that runs patrols out of Rumangabo. When I finished studying I wanted to do some good for my country. I still remember how the park used to be. We all deplore the current state of affairs – what political instability has done to our country and its infrastructure. It’s terrible that so many people in this country seek to benefit from the situation despite the fact that they’re destroying what little remains.
I’m proud of what I do and I go to work each morning with my head held high. Like any paramilitary service being the Park Ranger Service is not without danger; especially in a country like ours which has seen more than its fair share of war. That said it is worth noting that generally speaking, in the southern sector of the park, we carry out operations against people who are not armed. The majority, like the charcoal manufacturers and others, carry spears. The same is not true of the central and northern sectors where the poachers are armed. It is our duty to fight the enemies of the park and restore it to its former state and I, for one, am going to do that.
